Things I've learned observing a Parkland 7th grade social studies class online:
1. The teacher doesn't know what most kids look like because they never turn on their cameras.
I asked one student why they choose not to: "Usually because we don’t get ready."
2. Online school for some of these middle schoolers includes getting their younger siblings on their online classes and making lunch for them.
3. Students prefer to respond in the chat box instead of using their microphones. Is this because they prefer texting? Are self-conscious about their voices?
4. A lot of kids are not keeping up with assignments. The teacher I've been following had to give about 40 percent of his students incompletes for the first quarter.
