‘Silicon Valley dudes buying Teslas’: California struggles to expand electric-car market
People who buy EVs overwhelmingly fit a narrow demographic profile: male, white, w/ household income >$100,000.
This must change to reach Gov. Newsom’s 2035 goal: https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/Silicon-Valley-dudes-buying-Teslas-15738651.php

According to rebate data I analyzed, electric-car buyers in California are typically:
68% male
45% white, 28% Asian American
72% have household income >$100K
That leaves out many women & people of color, a majority of the state's population.

Electric-car buyers are also heavily concentrated in affluent coastal areas.
The Bay Area is home to about 1/5 of California's population, but the region made 32% of electric-car purchases.

The EV disparity is most striking in terms of gender:
Women buy 45% of new cars sold in the U.S., yet they buy less than 1/3 of electric cars.
Why? @PhilTing said 1 factor could be the narrow range of EV choices.
"The best-selling cars right now are trucks, SUVs and minivans"

That said, a lot of work is being done across California to make EVs accessible to more women/ people of color/ lower-income folks.
Oakland resident Maya Katz-Ali recently bought a plug-in EV through a subsidy program.
“I don’t think I ever thought that this would be possible"
