The trial showed that the cover crop areas effectively mineralised the N in the soil and reduced nitrate leaching. Soil structure improvements and earthworms numbers were also assessed in the four areas. 2/5
The final yield results showed a reduction where the cover crop had been, but this was largely due to increased pigeon and slug damage in these areas. 3/5
The results showed a need to consider the reason for using cover crops on your farm and to if wet soil conditions are likely in the spring, to allow soils to dry out by leaving a large enough 'window' between cover crop destruction and spring crop drilling. 4/5
