#NSGC20 C05 - let's gooooo!
Law enforcement generates family trees as far as 3rd and 4th degree relatives?! From SNPs found at a crime scene? Damn, they're more thorough than I ever was in clinic
Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) happens as secondary step to traditional policework during crim investigation, but can reduce # days of investigation e.g. Golden State Killer
Can also be used to exonerate via orgs like Innocence Project
Theoretically, should exonerate more POC (overrepresented in prisons), esp since db has more white males in it (and POCs are arrested way too often), but should we be hopeful?
FamilyTreeDNA and GED match used as dbs to search for SNP profiles and only recently started to give users option to opt-in/out of law enforcement searches (but how informed is this concent? And what about relatives who disagree with opting in?)
@GCBrianne, a real pioneer in GC, has tools for us that we can use if/when we have clients who find unknown relatives through DTC testing and DNA matching
Christmas gift gone horribly wrong: 2 sisters find out they're mat half sibs bc dad was suspicious of non-paternity and bought the girls DTC testing as a "present". Merry Christmas indeed
Rxns to parentage results incl stages of grief, shift in identity. Some need support for situation and others become advocates to others
