I agree with everything you said up until the point where you just want them to go crazy and suffer.
As Christians (and yes I know religion has no say in politics and the law, etc etc) anyways firstly yes, you want to protect the community and isolate (prison)

...That dangerous person from society and that they do their time.
From that experience in prison, they reflect and learn, offer counselling, help that person repent for what they did.

Instead of judging them harshly and wanting them to rot in hell so bad (that's bad on our part as Christians), rather keep them locked (to ensure your safety and others) and offer whatever services needed to help them change (if there is potential)
