Waking up in Illinois with family, much to be grateful for
Probably won’t be on Twitter much this weekend,
thread
I wrote mid flight
last night.
lesson from my dad I learned Freshman year of high school about kindness & lifting others up always!!

In high school I recall seeing a kid I liked being bullied a couple days in a row.
The bully was 6’4 & on my basketball team, we were buddies.
The bullied was 5’5 & sang in show choir, we were buddies.
I recall being really bothered by it & asking my dad what to do?

My dad & I were shooting hoops
in our driveway when I told him about the bullying.
He stopped shooting & walked closer to me & said
Ty, nothing you do will ever make me not love you,
but if you see someone being picked on & you don’t step in,
I’ll be disappointed in you.

He told me a story of when he was in high school & a bully tied a much smaller kid up at recess to a tree in front of everyone.
All the other kids were laughing,
My dad walked up & punched the bully in the face & untied the much smaller kid.
He took a beating for it afterwards

He also told me 30 years later that boy
(now an accountant in town)
brings that up to my dad every time they see each other.
How much that meant to him that my dad stepped in

I wasn’t a fighter, but relied on my social skills.
I went to a few friends & we pulled our buddy aside & asked him to stop picking on the other boy.
We know you are tougher than him,
but imagine how HE FEELS each day before PE when you bully him.
It mostly stopped after that

I recall really putting myself in that kids shoes, I was small too.
I was just lucky I was good at sports, more socially confident than he was so I never got picked on.
I made it my mission after to ask him to come sit with us at lunch & always go out of my way to include him.

That was freshman year & I’ll never forget senior year being a party at this same kids home.
His dad pulled me aside at the party, & said you are the Tyler I hear of aren’t you?
I figured I was in trouble :)
He extended his hand & said I know what you did for my son.
Thanks.

We almost pulled him out of school because of bullying, now he’s graduating surrounded by all these friends & I just wanted to say thank you,
I know you played a role in that.
I was 18 & eager to get back to the party.
I didn’t think much about it.
As a dad, I now do.

As a dad, I now do.
I see kids (& adults) putting others down to try to make themselves feel better.
It’s a losing way to live.
As a dad now,
I’ll have the same talk with my daughter someday.
I’ll love her always, but if she sees someone getting bullied & does nothing, I would be disappointed.

I plead with you be kind today & always in real life & social media.
We have no idea the struggles others have.
Kindness costs nothing.
