Our real battle for freedom is the workplace, not Westminster. The point of production is where our struggle for freedom takes place daily. A major reason for Alasdair MacIntyre's split from the New Left was his belief that the New Left were not paying attention to this. https://twitter.com/KatyLeeson/status/1327621801850122242
MacIntyre's argument was that the struggle at the point of production was the basic anatagonism of society. This view goes back to Marx in Vol 3 of Capital when he says the reduction of the working day is the first demand in the move towards 'the realm of freedom'
EP Thompson responded to MacIntyre saying MacIntyre had explained the A, B and C of socialism with B and C left out, ie the class struggle outside the workplace, but MacIntyre's point stands- the workplace is where we meet questions of exploitation and freedom daily.
Our political system is designed to make us think putting an X in a box every 4/5 years for parties beholden to capitalism is freedom & democracy. Its not. Real freedom can only come from our daily lives and work looms large within this.
This is why trade unions were the number one target of Thatcher. Trade Unions were a bulwark against the diminution of our workplace freedom and exploitation. Allied with the assault on TU's was the embedment of the cult of productivity- strivers v shirkers.
Therefore our political and economic exploitation emanates from our daily lives. Work and productivity isn't freedom when our entire existence depends upon it. We see overwork as a virtue when it is in fact the pristine example of our exploitation and chains.
