Unpopular tweet time - this whole arguement is about a film in which the main character is autistic but is played by a non artistic actress.

To the first few dozen complaints she responded explaining that they had tried casting an autistic actress but failed /1 https://twitter.com/Sia/status/1329737397190451201
, that there were 13 actors & actresses in the film that were neurodivergent and that she was advised throughout by two neurodivergent friend plus other research. /2
After responding in this way for a while she then got upset and responding very negatively to these complaints. These negative responses, the original complaint & finally recent approval of an organisation the autistic community view very negatively have resulted in a pile on /3
I'm autistic and i dont like others speaking for me so breaking down the complaints -

A) ultimately she could have likely found a suitable autistic actress to play the role but if as she claimed they did try & couldnt overcome the difficulties then i can understand the choice /4
A) CONTINUED additionally this was all filmed years ago, all these people getting angry because there were other autistic actresses available dont seem to comprehend this all just didnt happen now.

/5
B) its better to never allow yourself to respond in bad ways because you are upset. This is a very human trait which i have never met anyone that doesnt do it, so i struggle to hold it against her here /6
C) the number of autistic people in the cast is remarkable, this seems to be getting stubornly ignored by the pile on, i find it sad people only hve interest in the mistakes and not the good bits /7
Unless she is directly lying she made great efforts through checking with friends on the spectrum and other routes to get it right. If it isnt entirely right then so be it, one mistake doesnt, for me at least, invalidate all the good this film could represent
