SO excited for this mornings STELLAR @sciencepolicy #CSPC2020 panel on the "Rise of Misinformation - Impacts on the Lives of Canadians"

FT. @AntonHolland @gabriellelim @this_is_farah @CaulfieldTim and Michelle Driedger

Moderated by @emmeslin
HOW TO DEBUNK MISINFORMATION:
1⃣ Good Science
2⃣ Highlight Gaps in Logic
3⃣ BE NICE (Be honest, be humble)
4⃣ Creativity Wins
5⃣ General Public is the Audience (NOT hard core deniers)

"Check, then share" - @CaulfieldTim
Climate Change as a source of misinformation:
⭐️People still do not understand how climate change will affect them and their family (I don't see it, it doesn't affect me) ➡️ leads to misinformation and disinformation

"We are seeing a crisis unfold here!" - @AntonHolland
Disinformation, intend to cause harm ➡️ motivated actors
❗️Rise of radical slurs
❗️Prey on people with intense fear (ie. Anti-Vax targetting vulnerable)

"One good thing about the COVID pandemic, is that social media platforms are starting to take responsibility" - @gabriellelim
There are real fears and realities behind peoples motivations.

"What we know is always provisional"

We tend to find ourselves in #EchoChambers ➡️ difficult to see beyond this - Michelle Driedger
❓Where are people looking for COVID19 information?
People are going to google, trying to learn more, break down jargon.

To cover all aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic we need a diverse amount of scientists, communicators and etc

"WE NEED MORE TRAINING!"- @this_is_farah
Can we draw parallels between COVID and Climate Crisis?
▶️There is profound polarization
▶️People DO want to believe factual information
▶️Everyone has their personal brand
▶️Listen to communities (do they have a reason for distrust?)

Answers from @CaulfieldTim @AntonHolland
The infodemic is REAL, BUT Lack of information is also dangerous.

We need more science and media literacy but we also need to be aware that governments and institutes have a responsibility to communicate.

@gabriellelim
"I have a love hate relationship with Pre-Prints"

⭐️Peer Review isn't perfect
⭐️We need scientists to use their integrity.
⭐️Are you an expert in this field? Should I check that this is correct and factual?
⭐️To journalists, be cautious when covering Pre-Prints

@this_is_farah
"Tension between info that is available, and what people might use to make sense of all this"

When we look at official websites, often we don't see what pages were updated? Where is this info coming from?
🔴 Ex. "Vaccines are safe" ➡️ WHERE ARE THE SOURCES

- Michelle Driedger
"Whether people trust science is very complex"

⭐️Flip-flopping of public health authorities advice ➡️ CHECK OUT @CaulfieldTim and @RSCTheAcademies's Guide on how we can do better!

https://rsc-src.ca/en/research-and-reports/covid-19-policy-briefing/let%E2%80%99s-do-better-public-representations-covid-19
What can we learn from America? Similarities/Differences?

⭐️Trump has politicized Science and COVID response
⭐️America is MUCH larger
⭐️In Canada there is more trust in our institutions

@gabriellelim
Q: Are there any lessons learned from the climate story that are translatable to COVID?

▶️Make the facts about the problem
▶️These facts must resonate with the individual
▶️Make it as interesting as possible
▶️Distrust in media, use institutes to reach audiences

@AntonHolland
Trust in science varies through history. Science skepticism is the lowest in the last three years!

How can we keep this?👏
Meet communities where they are at!
We need inclusive #SciComm (diverse language and platforms)
Fund initiatives that exist on the ground

@this_is_farah
There is a strong tendency to believe that we just need a better #scicomm campaign. We need to be transparent about procedure, tracing adverse response data and details of vaccines (and etc)

We have to be careful how we approach this and do this engagement.

- Michelle Dreidger
Hardcore deniers, remain small.

📢 LISTEN. People who are hesitant, could be for real issues.

Misinformation MATTERS in vaccine hesitancy. It is so critical to counter the misinformation as it is released.

@CaulfieldTim
People misunderstand the concept of RISK.

We need to prevent misinformation form taking hold. Lets meet this problem head on. We need just at much offense as defense!

"BE first, BE right, BE credible" - @NIVAInc

@AntonHolland
Parting Words:

@this_is_farah - We need TRAINING and FUNDING!

@gabriellelim - Social media has shown that they CAN act and intervene.

Michelle Driedger - Engage with communities AND work with them!

@CaulfieldTim - Platform reform, debunk misinformation, listen, GO SCIENCE!
