A few yrs ago at an ECR mentoring workshop, in frustration at the session’s framing, I wrote an alternative definition of resilience. Today I was reminded of it when a friend shared another awful exp of enduring senior women tell junior colleagues to contort themselves to ‘fit’..
We need to stop telling our most precarious & junior colleagues at workshops that to succeed they must overwork, sacrifice family & rest, do more, do better, accept less. It individualises the consqs of profoundly structural issues. Start from solidarity or stop offering advice..
I’m mad. I’m sick of hearing it & I’m tired of watching how this advice wounds & exhausts my friends.
If you’re an ECR reading, take this as a reminder that you‘re doing a bloody great job at your life, & don’t buy into narratives that work in the interests of those w more power

Anyways. I’m co-running an ECR women’s workshop at #OCIS2020 & I’m SO excited about it. I also very much don’t want anyone leaving feeling hurt or dismissed & I hope we’ve created something excellent & genuinely supportive
Here’s to continued solidarity, revolution & reflection
