Delighted to be starting today's #RebuildingHeritage webinar in partnership with @CloreLeadership and @HilaryCarty introducing our brilliant panel. This session has been put together in response to the concerns that you have been raising about leading during this difficult time.
What is good governance? How can we ensure we're being strategic? We're not expecting everything to be perfect but we need to make sure we're looking ahead to two or three years time and be confident in our activity
Should we forget 2020? asks @keitharrowsmith - we need to recognise it for what it is - acknowledge difficulty and grief and build in time for reflection and growth from this
Connecting the strategy to the people is essential - we need to keep reviewing membership to see who we are serving and boards must be responsive to changing needs, particularly in this time of change
Research has shown most boards are meeting more often at the moment to check their approaches - this is great news and shows boards are working well, embracing technology, to support each other and their organisations
Now is the time to make change but we need to mindful of checking for risks and bias. A great list of checks here about how to run useful decision making meetings
Great questions from the #RebuildingHeritage audience today - how can we resolve tensions between the board and membership? Meaningful engagement is key - strategy development needs to have a participatory element.
We've all been pushed into reactive mode, @Reyahn2 now sharing some tips on how to get ahead - increased audit frequency and increased meeting frequency can help you to regain control and oversight
'Don't waste a good crisis' @reyahn2 - what are the things you've always wanted to experiment with but never dared to? Now might be the time!
Whatever may be happening - do not abandon your systems, maintaining your governance process can give you touchpoints that give stability and a sense of calm
Interesting discussion around learning from this period - experimental opening models have been tested and evaluated in a way that would have been too disruptive to do before the pandemic, the findings can now be taken forward as we return to a fuller reopening of the sector
Planning for the future is challenging in changeable circumstances - boards need to be able to articulate a vision that includes choice and maintain relationships with stakeholders that do not lock you into particular ways of working
Top tips from @keitharrowsmith- define your safe space for operating and keep one eye on your organisation and one eye on the outside world, it's important not be too distracted by one or the other. Neither digging yourself into a hole or straying out into the woods!
Important final point from @keitharrowsmith - we should all pledge to make sure to appoint young people to our boards.
Our next @Heritage_NGOs debate is on exactly this subject, book to join us on Monday 23 Nov: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/heritage-debate-2020-tickets-124992761715
And what a brilliant way to close with a mention of #CuratorBattle as a reminder that we can still have fun even in challenging times and work together to amplify each other's voices! A huge thanks to our panellists @HilaryCarty @reyhan2 @keitharrowsmith & @CloreLeadership
