1st panel of the day focuses on #gender & persuasion in online & offline spaces. V interesting discussion about @coocho & @uhlon_dohlenko's research on pickup artists' self-presentation via 'proxy brags', extreme case formulations & reported witness testimonies
@VeronikaKoller's & @Noun_Fraze's research addresses the important question of why people join online incel communities despite their bad rep #LanguageAndPersuasion
@ALexiconArtist has asked a similar question with a focus on The Red Pill subreddit. Her findings suggest community members build a positive in-group image while at the same time disparaging out-groups.
Similarly, @rob_lawson1 examined manifestations of masculinity in The_Donald subreddit & found that the ideological content of these discourses revolves around nationalism and white supremacy. #LanguageAndPersuasion
@DrRachelONeill's ethnographic research found that the hierarchies established in these manospheres are found in other mainstream spaces as well and they re-create the sense of inequality experienced by members in their everyday life #LanguageAndPersuasion
