Whew...Ottawa...your performative activism is showing! A good portion of you showed up to a Black Lives Matter protest over the summer and then one by one stopped mobilizing against racism all together after your cool pictures were posted and the conversation was no longer viral.
Since that protest, your city officials have continued to uphold anti-Black and Indigenous racism within their policies and actions. In your silence police have continued to kill BIPOC in Ottawa and those were already killed have been denied justice.
The police service budget is in the process of being increased and systemic racism is being upheld more than ever so.. why are you silent? Why have you stopped showing up?
Did you think that all of the issues of anti-Black racism could be eradicated by showing up to one protest or posting one black square with a clever caption? Or was the issue only worthy of your attention when it was viral and improved your social media presence.
If you really care, you should still be showing up for Black & Indigenous lives right now and you should most definitely be able to do so when it’s not viral.
There is an ongoing action taking place in Ottawa right now. We have been outside in the cold fighting for our right to live free from state violence and systemic racism. Your presence is needed, supplies are needed at Nicholas & Laurier. Show up for Black & Indigenous lives!!!
