Don't want to make this too heavy, but things have been pretty rough for me lately. In an attempt to reconnect with some things that have resonated with me, I thought I'd make a (some?) little short thread(s?) about them.. I'll try to keep it spoiler-lite, but be warned!
On the face of it, Shirahama Kamome's Tongari Bōshi no Atorie (Witch Hat Atelier) is a story about a group of young girls learning magic in a charming fantasy world. While the magic provides a backdrop, the focus on the girls' personal struggles & growth is where it really shines
Coco finds herself thrust into the world of magic-users, struggling to keep up and measuring herself against their (much more experienced) level. Her battle with imposter syndrome and self-doubt is immensely relatable to anyone who's ever pushed themselves to try something new.
Honestly, her learning to accept her limitations, and to be kind & patient with herself as she grows, has had a huge impact on me. The way she comes to take pride in her own abilities, in doing things that only she can do, encouraged me to do the same and go easier on myself.
The story follows young magic users - some fighting against the weight of expectations, others trying to make their way with a physical disability in a less than accessible world, and others struggling to maintain their sense of identity as they grow.
These inner struggles, as well as the developing relationships between the young witches, are delicately woven into the framework of the larger storyline - driving the plot, and giving a warm, deeply personal depth to the fantasy tale.
This is all to say nothing of Shirahama's absolutely stunning artwork! Although I always prefer to read a physical copy if possible, this is one manga I'm most happy to have in my grubby mitts. From off-model comedy reactions to incredibly detailed spreads - it's. gorgeous.
