An audience member asked about making money from book sales. One of the panelists said it was a labor of love. So true! Don't think of writing a book as a way to quit your day job.

I made money (and keep making money each month) on my book. But it's not much. (1/7)
I self-published. This gave me complete freedom. Publishers don't really help with marketing so what was the point? I did the promos.

I use Amazon for paperback & Kindle and B&N for Nook. Eventually I'll record an ebook for Audible. I have it priced at $6 - $7 per book. (2/7)
I make the most from sales of autographed books. But, I need to package & ship them myself. I got so behind in shipping books earlier in the pandemic because I was afraid to leave the house!

Before the pandemic, I sold autographed books in-person. That was the best return. (3/7)
I fundraised upfront costs on Kickstarter: editing, art (interior & exterior), formatting, printing, packaging, shipping. I focused on organic sales & word of mouth. Through Kickstarter, I raised 2x my goal which covered all expenses and then some. (4/7)
My Kickstarter didn't just presell books. It included perks: signed copies, being thanked in the book, and consulting time with me. The perks made the Kickstarter worth it.

I'm undecided whether I'll fundraise upfront expenses for my 2nd book. (5/7)
I had done my homework. I knew writing books doesn't make much money unless:

1) It's a best-seller, or
2) You write a whole lot of books that add up.

My goal is neither. I just want to write the book I wish existed, to share others' stories. (6/7)
If you're so inclined, my first book #SpaceMillennials is available here: https://www.astralytical.com/rise-of-the-space-age-millennials

My second book is in the works for late 2021 about space tourism and private spaceflight. No title yet. I'm so excited to share these stories! (7/7)
