I was naive to believe Republicans valued American democracy. I don't think their coup attempt will succeed, but they've revealed who they are. They responded to a resounding rejection of Trump by attempting to demolish American democracy to ram him down our throats.

It's astonishing. You'd think their response would be, "We have learned that Trumpism is wildly unpopular; we should adjust in order to win elections." Republicans did grea this election. It was just TRUMP that lost. Many Rs voted R downticket but refused to vote for Trump.

Instead of examining where they went wrong & why Trump lost so badly, they invent lies abt fraud that are so outrageous & evidence-free they've lost 29 court cases (so far) abt it. Even Fox News says there's no evidence of fraud.

The lies abt election fraud are so bonkers that even just 50% of Rs believe there was fraud. HALF of their base isn't buying it, but the @GOP is still tweeting out LITERAL SEDITION.

The thing is, @senatemajldr told us during the Obama yrs that his endgame was ending democracy.

Mitch McConnell gleefully broke democracy & bragged abt it in 100 ways. Yet I still believed that we would never see an actual coup attempt on US soil. I never believed they would try to overturn the will of the people & install an illegal president.

Why I didn't see this coming after Merrick Garland stuns me.

But at its heart, I believed in America. I believed in democracy. I believed we were an imperfect union striving to live up to its promise. That we disagreed on everything but that. That we would all defend our democracy from all threats, foreign & domestic.

How tawdry & small we've become. A tattered rag that was once a great nation.

The GOP are using lies that they KNOW are lies to demolish out democracy. I never thought it was possible.

Their coup will not succeed, but the damage they've done to our once great nation will be much harder to defeat than a bumbling Giuliani/Ellis court case.
