If you're not here, why not? This panel is for YOU!

Panel Discussion 15 - This Panel Is for You (Yes, You!): Creating an Inclusive Culture of Allyship to Fix the “leaky Pipeline” https://cdmcd.co/RqPqAv
It’s happening now! Come join!
Some take-aways:
-if you get something wrong, apologize and move on. Don’t make it about you.

-have empathy, but don’t make it about YOUR pain. Use it to push you to be a better ally.

-be open and aware of language your marginalized colleagues use, and adopt it.
-If a marginalized student tells you about an issue, speak up about it! & encourage your students to speak up (if they want to) and make it obvious you have their back.

-Make sure you work with people at your level and above you that are diverse (not only more junior people)!
-Your behavior is more important than what you think or do! Model being an ally.

-As a mentor with diverse students: have open and honest conversations. Consult with others. Don’t assume you can offer everything-provide connections for other mentors!
-let people be mad!!!
-Acknowledge that academia was not designed for people from marginalized backgrounds!
-re-evaluate how makes someone a good applicant! Don’t accept the people who already know everything! Your job as a mentor is to TEACH!
-to increase diversity: work on the whiteness in your space. Recognize white supremacy. Do a lot of internal work. Make your department someplace not harmful for people of color. PAY PEOPLE to consult and help! Don’t try to fix it on your own!
-give up your power! Walk away from the table so someone else can take your seat. Center the experiences of people with the lived experiences.
-and also invite people with marginalized identities to speak about things BESIDES being marginalized!! Have them lead a cbt workshop, or a talk on ACT!
-we need to create a community where you don’t have to act like a cisgender white man to get ahead!!
