A note on chaṭh छठ
It is one of the most sacred folk festivals celebrated in Eastern UP, Bihar & Jharkhand. The word chaṭh छठ is related to Sanskrit ṣaṣṭhī षष्ठी (6th) because it is celebrated in kārtik month on 6th day of shukla Pakṣa[Bright half of the lunar month].1/n
Chaṭh छठ is also known an sūryă chaṭh सूर्य छठ because of the worship of first the setting sun & then the rising sun on the following day on a river bank. It is also called डाला छठ ḍālā chaṭh because of usual practice of using flat cane baskets known as ḍālā डाला. 2/n
The festival is celebrated in four stages -
Nahāy khāy नहाय खाय - 4th Day of kārtik shukla Pakṣa [Start]
kharnā -lōhanḍā खरना-लोहंडा - 5th Day of kārtik shukla Pakṣa
sandhyā arghya संध्या अर्घ्य - 6th Day of kārtik shukla Pakṣa
uṣā arghya उषा अर्घ्य - 7th Day [End] 3/n
From the 1st day until the last day, the devotees (especially married women and men) observe fasting and partake food and water only once a day. One of the key attractions of the Prasada during this festival is ṭhēkuā ठेकुआ which is a dry sweet made of wheat. 4/end.
