2. The youngsters of Appalachian Virginia, NC, SC, GA, and TN rallied to defeat the British attempt to convert American southerners into Loyalists of the crown in a bloody battle in the backwoods.

3. The Colonial victory in the uplands of South Carolina literally turned the tide of the Revolution. The Brits lost a third of their New World military resources and one of their best generals. King’s Mountain put the Redcoats on a retreating run that ended at Yorktown.
5. The next clash was at Cowpens, a few miles to the southwest. Virginian Daniel Morgan set a brilliant trap for the merciless British general Tarleton, and Morgan’s team of trained cavalry, riflemen, and ragtag militia delivered the most decisive ass-whipping of the War.
6. The Brits hope now rested in retreating toward the Atlantic, where they’d hopefully be resupplied with troops and provisions. The defeat at Cowpens put them totally on their heels.
7. After an indecisive battle at Guilford Courthouse in NC, the British army raced to Yorktown on the Chesapeake Bay. Instead of friendly ships from England, it found the French Navy blockading the bay. General Washington laid siege to Cornwallis’ army; surrender came next.
