With the new #bitcoin all-time high closing in quickly, I think it's important to dig into the data behind search volume in 2020 vs. 2017.

A lot of people have been taking @Google Trends data, but the SEO data from @semrush tells a different story.

Bitcoin SEO: A Thread... đŸ§”đŸ“Š
First off, #bitcoin related terms are currently bringing in 9.8M~ in monthly volume. That's over 400K different search keywords, terms, phrases, and questions.

Some of the top are things like "bitcoin price", "what is bitcoin", "bitcoin news" and just "bitcoin" by itself.

An interesting thing that @Google Trends data hasn't shown is that the monthly global volume for #bitcoin in Dec 2017 was actually lower than what we're seeing in Nov 2020 (via @semrush).

Dec '17: 2.5M vol
Nov '20: 8.9M vol

There is a very reasonable reasons for why...

There are obvious reason for why volume for #bitcoin terms is higher in 2020 vs 2017:

Despite what Google Trends shows, there are more people already familiar with #bitcoin than ever before. Search vol for **related terms** continues to climb.

Another indicator? Marketers.

How do we know marketers are spending more time ranking for #bitcoin terms?

1⃣There are WAY more sites indexing BTC-related pages now.

Dec '17: 143M SERPs
Nov '20: 350M SERPs

2⃣More BTC terms exist now than before. Ex: "earn btc interest" wasn't really a thing back then.

The more websites that relate to a keyword, the higher the SERP (Search Engine Results Pages) will be for those keywords. It's basically the number of search results that Google shows for a search term.

They also include the the "featured" results, like the screenshot below.

To understand the SEO health of a search term, it's very important to understand three keyword categories:

1⃣ Top search terms
2⃣ Top search questions
3⃣ Top related keywords (mispellings, etc.)

So what #bitcoin terms are people spending their time with?

The Top 10 #bitcoin search terms are pretty revealing.

Any marketer in the space should know that "bitcoin price" is the holy grail of SEO keywords. It has double the traffic of "bitcoin" itself. Plus, a higher assumed intent of the user searching.

It's always surprising to me how low the vol. for "buy #bitcoin " is compared to the rest of the top 10 terms. The data is telling:

It has almost as many results as "bitcoin price" (#1 term), but WAY less volume & a higher CPC / comp score.

Marketers, focus elsewhere.

A great indicator is understanding what questions are being searched. So what are people asking about #bitcoin ?

Despite "bitcoin price" being the highest volume keyword, the highest volume question is still "what is bitcoin"

Look how many results there are for that term

It's important for our community to understand some of these high-level data points to better discuss this topic we spend so much time on. How people are finding #bitcoin and digging into the space should be better understood.

A new all-time high seems to be coming. Get ready.
Worth adding some new clarity - when you search “bitcoin” on Google Trends, you’re only seeing results for that keyword. That data is excluding all the other related keywords and search terms associated with #bitcoin . That’s why the semrush data is much higher.
