It’s appropriate for public trust in elections to be eroded if, in fact, they are shenanigans. It’s a duty of the electoral process to assure the public beyond a reasonable doubt.

Thus all electoral processes should be inspectable by citizens and end to end auditable.

No. Anecdotally there are reports through space and time of poll watchers sounding the alarm to shenanigans occurring and NOTHING HAPPENS. There is also a huge variety of...
shenanigans that can occur out of the sight of poll watchers, including a large variety of electronic and software pwning. The Godless Engineer should know this. He supposedly has a graduate degree in computer engineering. But I guess computer security training isn’t mandatory.
Basically, poll watchers may be necessary to the sort of assurance but they aren’t sufficient.

An honorable system of police and courts, as well as open systems that can be audited by concerned citizens with the appropriate expertise...
and a few important, but cryptographically provable properties, are what we need.
