Tips for scientists working w/ journalists:
Brian Owens:
➡️ Pitch a story not just a topic (people like to read about people)
➡️ know why it should be written & why now
➡️Where should it go?
➡️It doesn't always work out
Twitter & 📩 work well to contact journalists #CSPC2020
. @Tzeporah: a few things to think about:
➡️The story of me, now, us
➡️What's the challenge, choice & opportunity
➡️Pivot to the frame & never "explain".
Opinions around how scientists should communicate. #scicomm #science #CSPC2020 @sciencepolicy
. @luckytran: consider the following ⤵️
➡️Think how to reach beyond the barrier
➡️We have to practice #scicomm
➡️Personal stories are important
➡️Understand how the balance of power works
Don't spend 90% ⌚️explaining things, think why you're speaking to a journalist.

. @luckytran: Scientists should help elevate the people that our research is affecting. We should raise the voices of diverse communities.
We need to be on facebook, tiktok & IG. People are in culture ALL the time, we need to be where the people are!

#CSPC2020 @sciencepolicy
. @alexi_rwhite: advocacy tools ⤵️
➡️Openness to compromise w/ gov. (harder when protesting).
➡️What is your leverage internally & externally?
➡️What is your relationship w/ media?

What is your goal? A specific outcome or shift? 🔑

#CSPC2020 @sciencepolicy
Q: how do you address different levels of government?
. @alexi_rwhite :
Theories are the same⤵️
➡️Relationship building is 🔑
➡️Speaking w/ a MP is similar to media: what is your story?
➡️Can they convince people? We need to equip w/ a narrative

. @alexi_rwhite:
Re: different political parties ➡️ it is not an exercise in chancing minds. We are helping to muster information & build a coalition w/ them so that we can all work towards the same goal. This is a more successful approach.
