Stop talking about #specialforces culture as if it is some inherently mythical club. Soldiers are doing a *job* not operating in an alternate universe. #SF culture is nothing but the practices and norms that are permitted and fostered by the institution ( #ADF). #BreretonReport 1
Stop describing #specialforces work as unknowable and so unimaginably hard that it necessarily creates the conditions for terrorizing civilians and war crime dysfunction. 2 #BreretonReport
There are many intense/high pressure jobs that include witnessing death/violence. We don't assume social workers or ER docs need a special culture that includes hazing, killing for sport, secrecy, or fetish-like reverence. 3
In fact, #specialforces are often the most armed, most protected, and *safest* individuals in a war zone. The Afghan civilians that #ADF terrorized are the ones that required protection. 4
The horrific war crimes outlined the #BreretonReport- 'blooding', competing for kill numbers, codes of silence- are natural extensions of common, sanctioned institutional practices that are not a secret! 5
'Culture' starts with hazing initiation practices that teach soldiers violence and breaking the rules is part of fitting and is fueled by institutional/public combat fetish as the 'real' and toughest work of militaries. 6 #BreretonReport
