I personally think we're staring down a gun barrel at the end of American democracy. Even if we survive, it's clear the stability of our democracy is fragile at best, far more so than we're willing to admit. Provided we make it through this, steps need to be taken to secure it.
Abolish the Electoral College. It has to go. We have a system that allows for the winner of the popular vote to lose and a fucking insane dictatorial manbaby clown to win. We can do better than this.
institute term limits for Congress and the Senate. A big part of the reason we're here now is because of treasonous, corrupt lifelong Senators like Lindsey Graham, and do-nothing-while-the-GOP-destroys-us-all Representatives like Nancy Pelosi.
make the President of the United States answerable to the law. No person is supposed to be above the law here, but POTUS may as well be. It needs to be possible for a sitting POTUS to be held accountable by prosecution if he commits a crime.
Cut paychecks for the House of Representatives. we aren't getting a COVID stimulus package before Christmas because they're all making almost 200k annually. Why should they give a fuck? Bring their salaries down to the level of their constituency and watch shit get done.
Social media platforms need to be much stricter about not allowing blatant disinformation aimed at subverting democracy. Shit like Russia Today or Ian Miles Cheong, for example. Ban them. They are foreign agents actively trying to harm us.
we need more political parties. It's clear the two-party system doesn't work for us anymore. We need more options. More options means change. More change means more opportunities.
The Constitution MUST be amended keep corporate money out of our political system once and for all. If you've ever wondered how so many of our leaders became so corrupted, this is a big reason why.
Politicians don't go to fight needless wars. We do. I did. So did many others. Therefore, it should put to the American people whether or not we go to war. Some things are worth dying for. Some things are not.
We need a standardized, effective pandemic strategy designed by experts that is uniform from one administration to the next, with protections set in place against it's removal (amending it based on needs is permissible).
We need younger people to run for office. People with new ideas, people with a desire to help the marginalized, people who relate to their constituents. And again, this is why we need term limits. Because after a while you no longer identify with them.
These are just a few changes necessary IMO to shore up our defenses against future Donald Trumps. It's beyond fucked up that through WWI, WWII, the Cold War, etc that the closest we've come to destruction is from our leader. That has to change. Now.
