A thread on why diabetes month feels like screaming into a void (to me)
This month is diabetes awareness month. A month which seems to go largely unnoticed by most, esp by celebrities who pride themselves on being “inclusive” yet largely ignore our community 1/8
Maybe we aren’t disabled enough? Anyway on a post about diabetes and mental health a woman said “why are they focusing on diabetes, children also live with CF & leukaemia & there is no focus here on their mental health” as someone rightly said 2/8
“did you just all lives matter on a diabetes post”? I think we largely go unnoticed beyond the “why don’t you just stop eating carbs” post b/c we go through life to them somewhat “normally”. I’m sorry to say that nothing I do in my live is normal. Just b/c I appear fine. 3/8
I managed to do what society deems “normal” does not mean it was without struggle. Yes I got a high paying job, which is what society deems to be the penultimate crown of “normal” doesn’t mean I am not disabled. In fact my job nearly killed me b/c of negligence by my employer 4/8
After the job I have yet to have another permanent job b/c of distrust and the realisation the working world isn’t designed for people like me. I am starting my own business so that I don’t have to choose between my health and my career. As your job shouldn’t kill you at 23. 5/8
That is not normal. Neither is waking up at 2am feeling like there is someone sitting on your chest, while you sweat, gasp for air and have to eat sugar to make it stop. That is not normal. Only to get up a mere few hours later to go to work to pretend I am “normal” 6/8
It is not normal to have to fight so hard to get the things you need just to stay alive. It’s not normal to decide where you live so you can best effectively keep yourself alive. Its not normal to be attached to things 24/7. None of this is normal but no one wants to hear it 7/8
They don’t want to know that the society & structure they benefit from & may have even created comes to the detriment of others like me. Me, who I consider one of the lucky ones, who still isn’t able to do “normal life”. End rant 8/8
