So here’s the thing…I don’t think the gov’t (or stakeholders) have the time or resources to go through a 2025 target-setting & planning process. It just diverts time & resources from planning to hit a (stronger) 2030 target & more importantly from advancing the 1/ #cdnpoli https://twitter.com/ElizabethMay/status/1329499504928808962
…laws, regs, policies, programs & investments needed to start cutting more pollution sooner. There is only so much staff capacity (in both the bureaucracy & Min’s office) & political capital available to get stuff done, let’s focus it on action. I share concerns about 2/
…accountability for putting us on track to 2030 & beyond, & the desire for some accountability SOONER than 2030. The legislation includes a requirement that the Commissioner for Env & Sustainable Development must audit progress at least once every 5 years. So Canadians will 3/
have a CESD report done ~ 2025, which will identify whether the government’s plan/progress toward 2030 is on track. Does a legislated 2025 target (without any real repercussions if it’s missed) really offer anything more? I’d much rather we all focus our time/effort on 4/
…securing laws & regulations that cut pollution, & supporting gov’t efforts & investments to deploy the climate solutions we have today & find (R&D) those we’ll need to hit net zero 2050. That’s plenty of work & far more important than fighting for a 2025 target. My 2 cents. 5/5
