My comprehensive vegan turkey guide to a compassionate holiday season: THREAD.

CW/TW: food/animal cruelty discussion**

**I DO NOT USE IMAGES OF ANIMAL ABUSE
An estimated 300 million turkeys are slaughtered annually in the United States. They are kept in cramped quarters and treated inhumanely from the moment they are hatched. Stress from living in confinement with other birds leads to fighting amongst the birds.
In order to combat this, the turkeys often have their beaks and toes cut to prevent injury to the flesh-- without any pain relief.

Turkeys are bred and kept in a way that optimizes maximum weight gain, preventing them from living a fulfilled life.
Turkeys today weigh ~10 pounds more than they did 50 years ago.

Turkeys for slaughter may only live 6 months, but in the wild they can live up to 10 years.

If you're still with me, read on to see my complete list of ways to keep death off your holiday plate.
"THE PARDON"-- No Evil Foods

This right here is my current number one turkey replacement. It comes with an herb rub/crust and gives the closest imitation of that flakey tender turkey meat texture. I tried it in a "leftovers sandwich" and it was DELICIOUS.
Prep tips: cut potatoes, celery, carrot, and onion, add rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper, 1 bouillon cube or 1 tbsp bouillon paste, 3/4 cup white wine, and place roast on top. Steam 30 minutes, roast/bake for remaining time (~60 minutes). Goes great with homemade mushroom gravy.
HOLIDAY ROAST- Gardein

This has been a staple at all my holiday dinners. I have been known to travel far and wide to collect a few for the freezer to stock until they come back in season. The stuffing and the gravy that come with this all-in-one log of joy are PERFECTION.
365 Whole Foods Market Meatless Plant-Based Roast w/ gravy:

Generic version from Whole Foods for those on a budget.

It is very similar to the Gardein variety, but lacks a the same textures and flavor quality, IN MY OPINION.
CELEBRATION ROAST-- Field Roast

I wanted to love this. The flavor is nice and savory, but the texture was just not there for me. When you pick a wheat protein based roast you always run the risk of the seitan being a bit spongey. I liked it, but not my #1.
TOFURKY Plant-based roast:

This one makes it to the top of every Thanksgiving list every year, and I'm here to beg you to not bother. I respect Tofurky because they were there when no one else was. Bland and chewy, this one is everything turkey ISN'T. Some like it, I do not.
Vegan Whole Turkey-- Vegetarian Plus

Two years ago I snatched up one of these for $60, along with a ham roll from the same company. They were expensive and gross. Do not waste your money. Turkey meat was flavorless, had a chemical/sweet aftertaste, and the texture was bad.
I cannot say enough about how nasty it was. If you, your friends, and family are into wasting $60 or more for a festive centerpiece, by all means, get one-- but get something else to actually eat.
If you wanna DIY your turkey this season, here's some good looking recipes I have sourced for anyone wanting to try their hand at a savory seitan roast!
