THREAD: Canada's new climate bill.

Not shocking - it's a mixed bag of good messaging and not good enough policy.

But, with a minority parliament, it's a decent enough floor that the @NDP, @CanadianGreens & @BlocQuebecois should come together to make it much better.
They can start by sharpening the goals and targets actually in line with IPCC science, which requires zeroing out global emissions, and bringing big polluters like Canada down to negative emissions by 2050.
Then, they can take steps to make sure this piece of climate legislation doesn't get shredded by the fossil fuel industry by banning fossil fuel executives from the advisory group the bill would create.
To bring this in line with what we need in a made-in-Canada Green New Deal they would need to bring measures into the bill to ensure Indigenous nations are full partners in climate action AND require just transition plans to be part of the accountability mechanisms.
We can't afford, especially in this pandemic, to disconnect climate action from economic and social justice. We need a climate plan that creates millions of good jobs, invests in communities and makes sure no one is left behind.
