Okay, friend confused by furries, listen. Not everyone literally wants to be an animal. Often, it's an abstract expression of human characteristics. It's not as alien a concept as you might think.

Think on song and literature and colloquial phrases. Are you a wolf or a sheep?
Stubborn as a mule?
Bull headed?
You ever seen someone with eyes of a predator?
A hawk-eyed stare?
Ferocity of a lion, cunning of a tiger?
Mama bears?
A real bull dog?
A snake in the grass?
A woman with feline poise?

These concepts are all over various forms of human expression.
Let me jump a little step further - are you familiar with synesthesia?

Now I'm not saying this is part of synesthesia, but it is the easiest spring board I can think of to make sense of something so foreign to many.

This very personally "true" sense some of us feel for things
I relate synesthesia here because while I am not a furry, I do experience abstract anthropomorphic self representations from time to time. There's a full body tattoo I want to design at some point, but, for me I sometimes get these distinct sensations that my limbs are elemental.
By that I mean my:

Spine is steel
Legs (up to the knee) are mountain rock
Left arm is water
Right arm is fire
Upper chest/jaw are light
Back of neck/base of skull are dark

And these are *very* literal sensations, not simply artistic or aesthetic choices.
So! That is how I also comprehend some part of furry. Of course, there are many many reasons people are drawn to the community and not all fall into this category.

But, I am endlessly fascinated by people and psych. I don't know what it's like to relate to a creature like that.
Tbh I've been perplexed by the concepts of favorites for my entire life and so as someone who is *constantly* searching for their identity, I find myself curiously studying people who *do* have favorites or core identities.

So furries express themselves in a fascinating way.
When I do spot those people who have chosen a fursona based on their characteristics - or their desired characteristics - it becomes a fascinating look at who they are, much more than a selfie could be.

What elements of themselves are they exaggerating? It's interesting.
Note: exaggerating in this context is artistic/abstract - not about truth/fact. Exaggerating in the sense of caricatures - like my doodles of myself always have big round ears, yet my actual ears are pretty small and almost elfy.

Anyway.

Do something with y'brains, kids. When something is weird to you, study it or move on. Weird usually turns out to be fascinating when you get over yourself.
