You took ONE not-for-credit university course on journalism & a) got a job as a press sec & b) think YOU are somehow qualified to critique an actual journalist's story? #ableg 1/ https://twitter.com/JessStCool/status/1329247742313435137
Once again the UCP team of comms professionals chooses the path of attacking any critical message toward them rather than pushing forward messages to which their audience might be receptive.
I've written before about part of the problem being lack of bench strength. #ableg 2/

What I mean by that is they don't have many ppl ( @jessstcool included) on their team who have deep, successful journalism or comms experience with getting an audience to respond to a message. #ableg 3/
@JessStCool may not like @CityNewsYEG's story, but her tantrum is that of an inexperienced junior employee without tactical awareness of either her problem or the best strategy for fixing it. #ableg 4/
First, in broadcast, which differs from print, in a continuing coverage scenario, it's fine to present multiple sides in separate stories because of time constraints, as long as the story expressly delineates it will be revisited in the future, as this one clearly does /5
It's then the obligation of the reporter to ensure that happens. It's the obligation of @JessStCool to ensure her party's viewpoint is included in @CityNewsYEG's story at that point. But let's be honest--her boss hasn't been doing that. Which brings me to my next point. #ableg /6
Her job is NOT to have sour grapes about the coverage of this mess of a comms strategy over parks.
Her job WAS to work with her department & create a messaging rollout that answered Albertans' questions. Journalists = Albertans. The UCP consistently forgets this. #ableg /7

And if @jessstcool & the rest of the UCP communications brain trust can't seem to find a messaging strategy that makes their plan for parks palatable for the electorate, well, they'll have to do what those of us in private sector comms do every damn day...
You go back to the client & tell them the reason the press is bad, the reason the public is mad, the reason your messaging strategy isn't working is because it's a bad idea.
Then you change course.
THAT is why you need communications professionals in communications jobs. #ableg
