There is a persistent theme in American* politics, that “class” does not have anything to do with ones relationship to the means of production (because we don’t talk about that) but instead is a collection of aesthetic and cultural signifiers. (Cont)
Class is not about if you drive a truck or ride a bike. Class is not about if you like country music or jazz. Class is about your relationship to capital, specifically the means of production. If you make your income by selling your labor to someone else, you are working class.
A car dealership owner who drives a lifted truck and wears blue jeans is a capitalist. A Starbucks barista who reads the NYT every morning and lives in the middle of a big city is working class.
Class is also not determined strictly by how much money you make. “Working class” and “capitalist class” are not directly the same as “poor” and “rich.” Someone who makes $30k/year as a landlord is a capitalist. Someone who makes $200k/year as a surgeon is a worker.
