When it comes to enduring pandemic adversity, Manitoba schools are at the front of the class

As a parent, here's my take 1/
- NYC is dead wrong to close schools before closing gyms & indoor dining
- emotional health of children & their parents > economic considerations
- cohort system is working to limit spread in MB schools
2/
- it's up to the grownups to keep covid out of schools
- we will see cases enter our schools if it's in the community
- teachers & school staff are exhausting themselves to keep our kids safe and deserve our eternal gratitude
3/
- given how many cases have entered so many different schools its astonishing how few outbreaks have occurred
- sadly the province is not providing clear data on school exposures. If they did, parents would be less anxious
4/
- it is pathetic that 8 months into a pandemic our best source of info on MB school exposures is a crowd sourced google sheet.
- MB is doing an absolutely terrible job communicating with parents and easing their utterly reasonable fears
5/
- I completely understand why some parents are pulling their kids from school. It's very scary out there.
- most families don't have the privilege to home school
- schools are sadly the safest places for too many children who face abuse at home
6/
- extending the winter break is a great idea
- educators need a break
- we can expect a big spike in cases after Xmas
- keeping schools closed for an extra incubation period will help to reduce that spike (even if past experience shows marginal spread )
7/
- Kids need school. They need to run and play and laugh with their friends at recess. Their minds need stimulation. They need to be held accountable for their actions by adults outside their family. They need (positive) peer pressure. They need a break from their parents.
