To those who have wondered why trans educators and activists “always bring up trans issues”, I present a thread detailing why:
In 2015, the National Center for Transgender Equality conducted the single “largest survey ever devoted to the lives and experiences of trans people.” http://www.ustranssurvey.org/
The survey found that:
- Trans people are unemployed at 3 times the rate of the overall U.S. population
- Trans poverty rates are close to twice as high as those of the overall U.S. population
- 77% of trans people were forced to take steps to conceal their identity to avoid workplace discrimination
- 59% avoided using a public restroom; 32% limited their food intake to avoid restroom use; 8% suffered UTI and/or kidney problems as a result
- BIPOC trans people reported significant rates of harassment during K12 years; 75% verbal harassment; 59% physical assault; 21% sexual assault
The Center for American Progress conducted a study on the LGBTQ+ community in 2020 https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/lgbtq-rights/reports/2020/10/06/491052/state-lgbtq-community-2020/
Key findings include:
This is not a boutique issue or something that “trans snowflakes” are making a mountain out of. This is a human rights crisis that is worsening in the face of deliberate apathy, tacit hatred, and collective shrugging. Pay attention. Be loud. Stand up.
