Had I only known that overthrowing democracy was (apparently) a perfectly legal option to dealing with an unwanted election result, I would have headed to Florida in 2000.
Because, to be clear, there simply aren't going to be any consequences to this, right? We're going to let the president do anything in his power to overturn this election and just hope he doesn't succeed?
We're just going to tell the 80,000,000 people who voted for Joe Biden that, well, we tried nothing and it didn't work so you're just going to have to accept permanent minority rule, right?
And if the republican gambit doesn't work and Biden is sworn in on January 20th, we'll just be told "haha well that was close" and no one will be prosecuted or punished in any way and we'll just watch as nothing works and wait to go through all of this again in 2024?
My concern is if we let a coup attempt happen and don't punish those who try it, it doesn't matter whether it succeeds or not, representative democracy is already dead. Just allowing that option to exist is a fatality.
And that of course is aside from the literal fatalities taking place every single day as everyone in government bends over backwards to appease the illegal actions of a despotic madman. So yeah. Fun times.
I'm losing my mind over this NOW. I cannot imagine how I would feel if someone I cared about died from COVID during this time and I knew full well it could have been prevented.
