1. NZZ says that's ICU aren't full in Switzerland🇨🇭, and that people spread a fake rumor... They say they have more serious sources. 🤡
Let me show you that the inverse is factually true.
NZZ ARE THE ONE SPREADING FAKE RUMORS USING BAD DATA. 🧵 https://twitter.com/EckerleIsabella/status/1329424248889335810
2. "Not all beds that are available are certified. However, anyone who does not regularly deal with databases such as "ICU Monitoring" cannot see this at first glance." So says the @NZZ
3. http://icumonitoring.ch  is a private website like http://corona-data.ch  which is run by an academic using free official data. It's not an official website from the Confederation which is providing primary data. It's aggregating and presenting already available ones.
4. Problem is, http://icumonitoring.ch  relies on centralized data from VBS/DDPS (KSD/SSC more precisely). In a nutschell, Cantonal Hospitals just send KSD a form with occupancy numbers two times a week. KSD dataset has shown serious reliability issues since September.
5. They've got digit issues for the reports (apparently now solved). For exemple, when GVA reported a total COVID bed occupancy of 359 patients, KSD reported 35, for 419 they reported 41.
6. They aslo update their free data only two times a week. Depending on the doubling time, numbers can change a lot between two updates. It can almost double in certain situations.
7. At one point, they simply halted publication of the data which was used by conspiracy theorist to spread fake news. The said 'theorists' then reacted saying it was a conspiracy to hide the truth...
8. Now you can see the data again, but with this warning : "The KSD restricts itself to the publication of the data, their interpretation is the responsibility of the BAG." Not of icumonitoring, of conspirationists, and nor of NZZ.
9. So yes, the NZZ are accusing people of spreading fake news, themselves relying on unreliable data which has been used by conspiracy theorists for weeks...
Data that KSD/SSC gently ask people not to interpret without the help from official bodies.
10. Now, let me explain why NZZ is not only making a stupid error, but also try to manipulate their readers, at least a little bit...
11. They say lots of people a spreading fake information from newspapers on twitter, and that even experts like @EckerleIsabella have fallen prey to the error.
Yeah... sorry not even close. 🤡
12. News that ICU are full is based on a press conference where the Swiss Society of Intensive Medicine said it was so. This Official Intercantonal Body simply is the one with the best intelligence on the subject.
13. Of course, NZZ knows that, but they prefer to concentrate on the spreading part on twitter, not on the origin of the information. It's way easier to wrongly speak about fake news that way.
14. They probably didn't choose Prof. Eckerle just by chance. Some xenophobic newspaper reprochaed her earlier this autoumn of being... German and working in a Welsch ('Genfer') Hospital. A target of choice. Thx NZZ for de facto re-using and cultivating xenophobic sentiments.
15. Now, let's be more concrete. Where does these NZZ extra beds come from? They exist! We've got some equipment and the places. Problem is, beds are not enough. ICU is an expert job, and we are laking trained professionals. Ventilators without trained people will kill patients.
16. Ramping up of Hospital capacities is okay (up to a point) for simple cases. It's not the same thing for ICUs. Of course, we will ramp up a bit, but each added 'real' bed decrease care quality. And when care level decreases in ICUs, it leads very fast to added deaths.
17. If the same amount of people die with 1149 ICU beds compared to 876 (because of decreased quality of care), there's not point pretending we have 1149 ICU beds.
