Asked why he didn't have a school reopening plan ahead of school buildings closing down, de Blasio says admin has been busy with other key efforts around fighting the virus' spread & that it's hard to plan ahead given all the dynamics at play, but planning is in the works.
The thing about this de Blasio answer is that it's similar to ones he's given many times throughout the covid crisis when asked for his plans about a long list of issues. It's a stunning lack of leadership. It's also how it was pre-pandemic, but stakes heightened this year.
It's important to keep in mind that de Blasio spent 2019 running for president, then turned around in February of 2020, early in his 7th year as mayor, and declared it was time to "Save Our City." Then the pandemic hit.
De Blasio says to those who want more clarity and planning from him that the coronavirus is "the most moving target I've seen in my life." Tho our understanding of the virus has evolved some, things have actually been fairly consistent for many months.
