I don't understand the discussion about extending Christmas Break after New Years. That's admitting defeat that people will gather and you need time to deal with the explosion of cases.

In that case, close everything well before Christmas to reduce cases ahead of gatherings.
Our hospitals won't be able to handle a Christmas explosion. If you seriously can't expect people to skip gatherings this holiday, knowing that it really looks like a one year thing, then you got to crush the curve early in December.
You probably need to extend both before and after to be safe but if you had to pick one, early is better.
Aside: a lot of us have skipped Christmas aside from a day or two of rest. Haven't been home for Christmas in years. I get it; you love this holiday but you can make the sacrifice.

Vaccinations and family bubbles are pretty certain to be in place in a years time. Just this year.
