Last night was the next-to-last Charlotte Moves Task Force meeting. The task force will put the finishing touches on its Transformational Mobility Network — $8B to $12B transit expansion — recommendations during its last meeting on Dec. 3.
On Dec. 14, #cltcc and @CLTMayor will hear a presentation of the report. Former Mayor Harvey Gantt chairs the 25-member task force, which has been meeting for eight months. Of the estimated $8 billion-$12 billion needed to build out the transit system, 50% would be local money.
That could come in the form of a new transit sales tax and dedicated property tax. Depending on what council decides — it seems all but certain #cltcc will endorse the plan — a public referendum would follow next year.
During a discussion Wednesday about why transit needs to be addressed now, Gantt said, "We will fall behind our competitors. Literally, we have no choice as a community but to move forward. ..."
"If we care about economic development, business development, neighborhood development, if we care about the issues associated with climate change — we must go forward."
According to @APTA_Transit, 47 of 53 public transit measures on the ballot this year passed, a rate of 92%. That's up from 69% in 2016. This will be a major topic of discussion and debate next year.
