/ Fascinating #CSPC2020 panel on Advancing Science Through the Braiding of Multiple Knowledge Systems, hosted by my DG Natalka Cmoc from @PSCofCanada . A few key takeaways: #indigenousknowledge
/ @LaurentianU 's David Fortin says, when creating spaces to foster the braiding of Indigenous knowledge, if it’s not a space that welcomes elders, it fails. There must be space for ceremony, for smudging.
/ @usask 's Jaqueline Ottman says that recognizing the value of #Indigenousknowledge – and treating it properly – is an important step in reconciliation.
/ @UCalgary 's Fred Wrona reminds us that Western science is inherently reductionist, hones the question down. But alternate, more holistic ways of thinking are important for addressing the challenges we face today.
/ David Fortin says that working with Indigenous communities requires Relationship, Respect and Reciprocity.
/ However, building these relationships takes time and requires resources (for visits, gifts etc.) that funders don’t currently allow for.
