There are many white librarians who will see this pr*ud b*y story as an extreme that they could never relate to. Just remember your racism doesn’t have to come with hoods and lynchings to be damaging. Your silence alone is enough to enable horrific acts of white supremacy.
Most times it’s subtle. Like rolling your eyes at BIPOC librarians for suggesting we not celebrate racist authors like Theodore Geisel or Laura Ingalls Wilder. If you view racism as something that exists on a sliding scale from minor to VERY BAD, take a beat to consider why.
Being a member of an infamous hate group and weaponizing your white tears/emotions against a non-white coworker when they call you out on something racist are the same thing. They cause equal amounts of insidious damage.
There is no nuance with racism. You are either listening to communities of color or you’re not. You’re either calling out racism in your own communities or you’re not.
In the first tweet I said your silence enables, but I should be more clear. White indifference and white silence IS a violent act of white supremacy. The end.
