I've been thinking a lot about the paper that just came out. I wanted to think before making some "profound" statement. Ultimately I don't think I have much more to add to the current narrative but I think what hurts extra hard about all of this is that...
Current circumstances affect our mentoring in profound ways. The sacrifices we are making for distancing right now means that we aren't physically there every second to guide and teach. Especially relatively young labs like mine, I try and show people myself how to do things
People chose to come to my lab for that reason. So the lack of my presence is felt. So hearing that my trainees are at a disadvantage solely bc of my gender and they should consider working for a man, on top of all the bs we're dealing with, just us a punch to the gut
Again we need to appreciate that mentorship is only one side of the equation and that the role of SPONSORSHIP is way overlooked in academia. Sponsorship is diluted by systemic racism/sexism.
In closing, I'm so proud of my trainees, and I'll fight for their success. (Which by the way can't always be counted in publications.)
