So today is #InternationalMensDay, something that is often used as a butt of a joke or not taken too seriously. Please note, that 75% of suicide victims are men.
They constitute around 80% of homeless people and around 70% of homocide victims. They also make up the vast majority of prison populations
Men are less likely to seek help if being domestically abused by a partner, especially in heterosexual relationships due to fear of stigmatisation and isolation from peers
Terms like ‘man up’ and ‘be a man’ damage any progress, and everyone is guilty of it at some point. Please do not try to blame men for their own victimisation - we do benefit from the patriarchal system yes, but most men are blissfully unaware of it
Of course, men are also less likely to seek help for mental health problems. Don’t laugh at your friends if they need help, and check in on them like you would any other friend. We just want to know that you are there
Boys also do worse than girls in education (generally)
Anyways, please check in on your boys. Not just today, but always. It’s important.
@NadineDorries said it was important, but has done nothing to stop it. @DrRosena’s mental health plans work for all. Not to make it political - but as a guy who has struggled before, I know who I’d rather talk to
