It's #WorkinPublishing week, so we've asked some of our staff for their top tips for jobseekers. If you're interested in joining this weird & wonderful industry, do read on!
Be on the lookout for organizations that can support you and offer networking opportunities, remotely and in person. Whether they've been here a few years or 10+, many of our staff recommended joining @SYP_LDN @SYPScotland - who offer valuable workshops & social events
Keep an open mind about what will help you and where you might land in your publishing career - explore departments that seem enigmatic to you, ask questions! You might surprise yourself with what's a good fit.
Be on the lookout for experiences that can help you learn transferable skills, including those not in house. Bookselling roles are hard to come by, but are incredibly valuable in this regard - no one knows the market better than a bookseller!
Sending a CV / cover letter? Make sure someone else reads it first, they'll pick up errors you might miss.

And make sure you use the cover letter space to also show the publisher you're passionate about their books! Not just their bestseller of the year, but upcoming titles also
You can research who is acquiring what on @thebookseller website (along with a whole host of great reporting). Get to know the publisher you want to work for, so you can show them in the interview that you're passionate
And lastly, don't beat yourself up if you feel like you're not making progress. Especially with the year we've had. The right role is hard to come by. Lean on your friends and family for support, network with industry members (tweet them!) and keep going. You've got this.
You can follow @canongatebooks.
