Yesterday I saw a patient who wanted a second opinion.

What became evident was that they thought the therapist they are seeing was taking too long, that the treatment was sub optimal and that maybe I had a magic potion or trick to get them better faster.

A thread 1/
the rehab and treatment they had received to date was in fact perfect.

I really couldn’t fault it. Well explained, well planned, progressive ,but it did what it should do as well....it considered healing times, return to sport factors and was as “aggressive” as it

could be in the most professional way.

It was simply impatience and an overwhelming desire to return to full training from the athlete that thought there may be more that could be done.

I get that. I’ve been there myself.

So a good chat and a little bit of reassurance

and they were on their way.

Rehab takes time, we can’t press fast forward (we wish we could!), yes, done properly we can facilitate the most efficient recovery but we must respect the process and the journey.

Better to get back and stay back, rather than be rushed back and break down again surely.

Therapists - don’t think your quality is based on speed of treatment or time taken to get back to sport.

Athletes- don’t get fooled by anyone promising “accelerated” gimmicks and gadgets - you can’t beat nature and time.

I like to see how my patients are doing 6,12, 18 months later.....
