/5 One of the survivors who died before his case reached First Tier Tribunal was my client. He was trafficked, sold + retrafficked into extreme labour exploitation over 3 years. CICA rejected his application saying there was no crime of violence. 3 more years to his appeal.. https://twitter.com/maybulman/status/1328629259053707269
/5 Repeated rejections by LAA for legal aid. He died, tragically, before the case could be heard. One of the most extreme cases of labour exploitation I've seen. Being sold is a marker for actual legal slavery. He should have been compensated for the violent wrongs he suffered.
/5 This is a really important report from @ATLEUnit + Jamila Duncan Bosu. The CICA system isn't fit or purpose for #modernslavery survivors. This issue isn't new. In 2014 the Joint Committee on the Draft Modern Slavery Bill recommended...
/5 that the Scheme be amended to include explicitly crimes of modern slavery as crimes of violence. The Government ignored the recommendation when passing the Modern Slavery Act 2015. I've worked on these cases for years and seen compensation awarded only very rarely.
/5 Pro bono and strategic litigation is one thing - but the Govt committed to compensating victims in its Modern Slavery Strategy in 2014. Simple amendments to the Scheme would allow these victims of cruel, exploitative, violent offences to be properly compensated.
