Random Yorknew thread (not very organized and I wrote it at 3am so I probably made some mistakes but it still goes over most of what makes Yorknew amazing for me):
The setting is wonderful and constantly adapts to the events taking place during the arc which makes the whole arc feel very much alive, which is essential to an arc with several different pieces that constantly move. Something that's important in a narrative like this is that
the arc will be able to maintain a consistently high level of quality no matter what part it focuses on, and luckily every plot point in it is interesting, fresh and good. The spiders are one of the biggest sources of intrigue at this point in the story so it's not hard to
understand what makes the sections involving them so interesting. Learning more about the targets of Kurapika's revenge is exciting and the Troupe lives up to the hype by having a strong dynamic, a ton of diversity & color and at the top of it having a strong & captivating head.
Waiting for Kurapika and the spiders to cross paths is thrilling and when they eventually do it results in some incredible peaks, and a gripping and intelligently handled revenge story about Kurapika losing himself in his hatred, and the targets of said hate are far more
human than one would initially expect which adds much needed moral greyness to the arc. Gon and Killua's side of the arc contributes a lot by firstly being an outsider perspective to the events involving Kurapika and the Troupe. They're also another piece in Yorknew's layered
plot, and they offer necessary tonal balance with their lighter moments to give a welcome change of pace from the heavy & dark content. It ofc helps that their lovable personalities and good writing behind their parts make them enjoyable to watch.
And the last part of the arc is Hisoka who functions as a chaos factor and fulfills his role perfectly. While the setting, plot and peaks are certainly a big part of what makes the arc great, my favorite aspect of it is its handling of the themes and message.
The theme of identity is explored through both Kurapika and the Troupe in contrasting ways, the former loses himself in his revenge, by executing his revenge and killing he loses a part of himself, but the spider on the other hand thrives through the killing and destruction,
instead of those things coming at the expense of their identity, those things are what creates their sense of shared identity. And Yorknew also deals with one of HxH's most prevalent themes; the importance of connections and having a place to belong to. Kurapika didn't fully lose
himself while trying to avenge the Kurta because he had something more important than his revenge, the friends he has made that fill the hole in his heart in a way revenge and hatred will never do. And this theme is naturally explored through the Troupe as well, all of them
having come from meteor city with no identity, purpose, family or a home found those things in the spider, it gives them what they lacked due to their circumstances and it's why they view it as more important than themselves and this aspect humanizes the antagonists of the arc
and makes them a genuinely sympathetic group despite being a bunch of murderers. And these things come together to create a very emotional climax where Kurapika had to choose between his friends and his revenge, and chose the former. The rather uneventful nature of the climax
is perfect for the arc. It leaves an odd feeling, and that's the intent. No one won in this scenario so a satisfying payoff would be out of place, both sides lost something important to them, however the arc still ended on a positive note because both sides still protected the
most important things to them. And Kurapika finally getting to hangout with his friends at the end of the arc is a sweet and beautiful conclusion to an amazing arc.
