Daryl Morey’s post-draft press conference is underway.
Morey credits Elton Brand, Peter Dinwiddie, Prosper Karangwa and more for the successful night
“Sorry it’s so late, after the draft it’s a scramble, so I appreciate you hanging in”
Daryl described this process as “intense” because of the short window they had to merge perspectives.
Morey: “we have two young superstars in their prime.”
Daryl did not take Keith Pompey’s question until he turned his camera on. Was a very funny moment. “Come on, Keith!”
“Al Horford is a really good player. I know there’s been some buzz around for and things like that... I don’t like how that went down here, because he’s very good, Josh Richardson the same.”
Daryl says with Seth Curry and “the other player who I can’t talk about,” he was focused on fit. Says that the Danny Green move allowed the Curry move to take place. Spoke at length about the value of elite shooting gravity.
Morey also says there’s an argument that Curry is the best shooter in the NBA.
Asked about Maxey, and the history of Kentucky guards blossoming, Daryl says he loves guards who can defend multiple positions.

Says a goal of Doc Rivers and Dave Joerger is to get out in transition, which Maxey does well.
Morey also says he strongly believes he will shoot better than his Kentucky 3P%.

“He’s a guy you get in the lottery. To get him at #21 in a position of need, we’re very excited about.”
Morey praises Joe and Reed. Says the team thinks Reed was massively underrated, and that he has a path to playing time after the Horford move. Seems like Morey thinks he has a legitimate chance to play backup four / five minutes.
Morey says the group likes betting on their second-round picks. Says Paul Reed’s contract has yet to be determined (NBA deal or two-way)
“We’re ready for free agency, we’ve got our plan ready to execute”
Morey says establishing the chain of command has been a major priority. Says he likes to push responsibility onto other people, and mentions the many former Houston assistants who have gotten jobs elsewhere. Says his goal is for Sixers front office people to get their own jobs.
Morey mentions that he took a lot of useful information from Elton Brand, Ned Cohen and Vince Rozman.
On surrounding Ben/Joel with shooting:

“If you go back, it’s completely insane how good these Ben and Joel lineups were.”
Morey says he expects complete chaos on Friday and Saturday. Says tonight’s moves give the team much more flexibility.

“We hope to add players that will help the team and not hurt our ability to improve the team.”
On Maxey falling: “I was thrilled. Teams tend to focus on weaknesses instead of celebrating strengths when guys fall.”

Morey cites Maxey’s pre-college track record, including USA Basketball, as encouraging information.

Says Maxey has continually improved is a team-guy.
Asked about the now-vacant backup center spot, Morey says it’s important to have optionality without Joel. Says Doc and his staff can get creative building unique up-tempo lineups around Ben with spacing and shooting.

“But I like adding a big so Doc has all the tools to attack.”
That’s it for Morey’s presser.
