Hard to fathom the political question of whether this gamble will pay off for Johnson amidst national crisis. Surely, in a 'post-militarism' society these sorts of wasteful and nefarious PR stunts can't pay off in terms of vote wins? Brexit-nationalism suggests otherwise.
The Conservatives don't want us to create a 'culture of dependency' through welfare spending, but want to sustain dependency on corrupt arms manufactures and remarry militarism with nationalism. Wasteful, nefarious and does nothing to increase social and environmental security.
The crisis exposed and exacerbated failed health and care systems which have been systematically disinvested, financialised and covertly privatised. The most pressing national security urgency for government spending is universal welfare and basic services, not nuclear weapons.
