He helps the teammate win possession/he creates the pressure for teammate to win possession, so he is the base of liverpool fc attack in a way. He gives the stage for his teammates to score.
Now keep this in mind and see him when the next time he plays, see how he works harder compared to anyone else on the pitch, and how well he is doing his role and how much of an impact it has on the team.
