The only really intellectual argument for staying in Afghanistan is that US and others need more time to do nation-building, I don't think Americans buy that so they don't use the argument, instead we get arguments from security, which just don't make any sense.
Why do we care if some handful of terrorists exist in Afghanistan in the future? During the entire Cold War, the Soviet Union had thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at us and we're worried about some guys with IED's 15,000 miles away?
And under what circumstance can we prevent terrorists from existing somewhere in the world altogether? We can't prevent thousands of deaths of children every year from gun violence.
